PM attends delegation level talks between India and UAE
NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi's high-profile diplomatic visit to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Friday has yielded massive strategic dividends, securing a $5-billion investment commitment alongside landmark agreements spanning energy security, defense, and high-end technology.
The visit, which marked the first leg of the Prime Minister's five-nation tour, culminated in intensive bilateral discussions with UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan in Abu Dhabi. Coming at a time of heightened geopolitical friction in West Asia, the meeting strongly reinforced the India-UAE Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
At the forefront of the economic gains is a substantial $5-billion financial package pledged by major UAE entities. This includes a $3-billion investment by Emirates NBD into India's RBL Bank, a $1-billion commitment by the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA) with the National Infrastructure & Investment Fund (NIIF) targeting priority domestic infrastructure, and a $1-billion infusion by the International Holding Company (IHC). Crucially, the visit fortified India's long-term energy security with agreements on LPG supply & strategic petroleum reserves.
The Strategic Collaboration Agreement signed between Indian Strategic Petroleum Reserves Limited and the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) will significantly expand the UAE's crude oil storage in India's reserves to 30 million barrels, while exploring new strategic gas reserves. Furthermore, Indian Oil Corporation secured an arrangement with ADNOC for long-term liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) supplies.
Deepening their security architecture, the two nations signed a foundational Framework for the Strategic Defense Partnership, paving the way for joint defense industrial collaboration, advanced technological innovation, and enhanced maritime security between the two nations. Prime Minister Modi also strongly advocated for unimpeded navigation through the crucial Strait of Hormuz, emphasizing its vital role in global food and energy lifelines.
