Tirath Singh Rawat sworn-in as the new Uttarakhand CM

NEW DELHI: Ending speculations about the new Chief Minister of Uttarakhand to replace Trivendra Singh Rawat, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) today announced its former state chief Tirath Singh Rawat for the post. 

Tirath Singh Rawat took the oath at Raj Bhavan in Uttarakhand today, which was administered by governor Baby Rani Maurya. He was the president of Uttarakhand BJP from 2013-15 and is currently the Lok Sabha member of parliament from Garhwal as well as a national secretary of the party.

Trivendra Singh Rawat, had to step down from the CM's post on Tuesday after completing nearly 4 years in office after a section of party MLAs objected to his style of functioning.

After taking the oath, Tirath said, "We'll take forward development works in the State. I'll hold a meeting with authorities over Haridwar Kumbh. For the first 'Shahi Snan' tomorrow, a plan is being put in place to shower flower petals from a helicopter. We welcome devotees to Kumbh Mela"

The 56-year-old new CM a staunch Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) worker hails from Pauri Garhwal district and is a post-graduate in Sociology from Birla College, Srinagar, Garhwal in Uttarakhand, he also holds a PG diploma in the field of journalism.

After the formation of Uttarakhand as a separate state, the BJP had swept the elections in 2017, winning 57 seats in the 70-member Uttarakhand Assembly and he became the first Education Minister of the hill state in 2000 under the BJP dispensation. During the 2019 Lok Sabha elections,  the party had fielded him from the Garhwal constituency and he won the election by a margin of more than 2.85 lakh votes.
