Dattatreya Hosabale replaces Bhaiyyaji Joshi as RSS gen secy

BENGALURU: Karnataka born Dattatreya Hosabale who was until now the Sah-Sarakaryavah (joint general secretary) of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, has been elected as the 'Sarkaryawah' (general secretary) of the organisation.

The post of Sarkaryawah is considered as the Sangh's number 2 in command after Sarsanghchalak (Chief of RSS) a post which is currently held by Mohan Bhagwat.

The election took place at the two-day annual meeting of the Akhil Bharatiya Pratinidhi Sabha, the Sangh's highest decision-making body that began on Friday in Bengaluru.

Hosabale replaces Suresh ‘Bhaiyyaji’ Joshi, 73, who has opted to voluntarily retire on health grounds, after being in that post for four terms of three years each.

Popularly known as ‘Dattaji’ in the RSS, 66 years old Hosabale, hails from a small village in Shivamogga district of Karnataka and is from a family associated with the Sangh Parivar. He is a post-graduate in English literature and joined the Sangh in 1968 Sangh.

Fluent in Kannada, Hindi, English, Tamil and Sanskrit, Hosabale was initially associated with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, the student wing of the RSS, and became an organiser in RSS. He is the founding trustee of India Policy Foundation, a non-profit policy research organization. He was the founding editor of Aseema, a Kannada monthly. He became Sah-Baudhik Pramukh (second in command of the intellectual wing of RSS) in 2004. 

With his ‘pragmatic’ outlook, Hosabale, 66, popularly known as ‘Dattaji’ in the RSS, is expected to facilitate better co-ordination with the BJP leadership during his tenure which will overlap with the crucial lead up to the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.
