Cyclone 'Yaas' pounds West Bengal, Odisha; four dead, lakhs evacuated

KOLKATA: As Cyclone 'Yaas' made a landfall near Chandbali-Dhamra port in Odisha today, it ravaged the coastal areas of north Odisha and neighbouring West Bengal with a wind speed of 130-140kmph, accompanied by rainfall amid a storm surge. 

As Yaas, whiplashed the eastern coasts ravaging almost everything that came in its path so far it has left at least four persons dead, according to an official from the disaster management teams three in Odisha and one in Bengal have died. 

Due to heavy winds, dozens of trees and electric poles were uprooted, low-lying areas were inundated, damaging houses and farmlands, as the cyclone left a trail of destruction in Odisha's coastal districts of Balasore and Bhadrak.

India Meteorological Department (IMD) has been issuing red-coded warning alerts on Yaas which turned into very severe cyclonic storm on Tuesday evening on its way to the east coast.

According to weather prediction, the landfall process would be completed around 1 pm after which the wind will slow down by the evening and the cyclone is likely to leave Odisha for Jharkhand by midnight.

The administration of Odisha had shifted over 6 lakh people to safer places from the coastal areas while West Bengal has moved nearly 20 lakh people ahead of the cyclone. 

Several teams of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) personnel from both the states have been deployed along with Marine Police, coastal guards and officials from that state electricity are on the vigil to deal effectively with the cyclone.  

Briefing the media Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has said that at least one crore people were affected and three lakh houses damaged in her state West Bengal due to the rough weather conditions arising out of the cyclone.

Banerjee said that as of now, the government has a preliminary idea of the damage caused, by the reports provided by the district magistrates and other senior officials, and the administration will take at least 72 hours to get a clearer idea.
