As per IMA, 624 doctors died due to COVID-19 in the second wave

NEW DELHI: The Indian Medical Asociation’s (IMA) has said that a total of 624 doctors have died due to COVID-19 in the ongoing second wave with Delhi recording the maximum of 109 fatalities, 

According to the association which represents physician of the country last year in the first wave, 748 doctors across India succumbed to COVID-19.

According to data till June 2 compiled at the IMA's COVID-19 registry, while Delhi saw the maximum number fatalities of doctors, it was followed by Bihar at 96, Uttar Pradesh with 79, Rajasthan 43, Jharkhand 39 and Andhra Pradesh 34, Telangana 32, Gujarat 31 and West Bengal 30, 

Notably, in the recent past, the IMA has taken up a strong objection to statements of yoga guru and Baba Ramdev of Patanjali who called modern medicine a stupid science.  

IMA had also written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi urging him to stop the 'misinformation campaign on vaccination by Baba Ramdev.' In the letter, IMA has also urged PM Modi to take 'appropriate action under sedition law.

In the letter dated 26 May, IMA said, "We are pained to witness the great services rendered by nearly 10 lakh of modern medical doctors in the forefront to work with dedication to keep the mortality of our corona patients around 1 per cent which many developed countries could not achieve are ridiculed and called as a stupid system."

 Although Baba Ramdev retracted his statement after wide criticism, he did maintain that modern medicine did not have a permanent cure for several life-threatening diseases, whereas he had cured them through ayurvedic medicines.
