MUMBAI: According to figures released by the Maharashtra state disaster management department on Tuesday, the death toll due to rain-related incidents in the state rose to 209 with the Raigard district which is the worst hit alone accounting for nearly 95 deaths.

According to the statement of the department, out of the 209 deaths caused so far due to heavy rains and floods since last week, while the maximum 95 were from Raigad,  followed by 45 deaths reported from Satara, 35 from Ratnagiri, 14 in Thane, 7 in Kolhapur, 4 in Mumbai suburban, 3 in Pune, two each in Sindhudurg, Wardha and Akola districts.

Most of the deaths in Raigad, Satara and Ratnagiri districts were caused due to landslides, while floods claimed lives in Kolhapur and Sangli.

Apart from human casualties, according to the department statement, the floods have also killed 58,722 domestic animals mostly in Sangli, Kolhapur, Satara and Sindhudurg districts.

The department further said, that a total number of 4,34,185 people have been evacuated to relief camps from affected areas of which 2,11,808 are from Sangli alone, the statement said adding that there were nearly 308 relief camps have been set up out of which 216 are in Kolhapur, 43 in Sangli, 29 in Satara, 16 in Ratnagiri and four in Raigad districts.

Meanwhile facing a flack for unchecking developments across the river beds leading to floods, deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar, who was on a tour of visit flood-affected areas in the Sangli and Kolhapur districts, has directed the authorities to make a list of unauthorised structures on the river beds.

"No permission can be granted to any structure within the river bed at any cost," he told the authorities

Latte addressing media persons, Pawar said that a committee would be set up under retired principal secretary Eknath Patil to study and suggest measures to remove river silt deposits. "This would clear the river path and ensure a smooth flow, thereby reducing chances of flooding," he said.

On the issue of flooding of the highways, Pawar also added that after studying the situation of the past few years, the state would be discussed with the Union Minister of roads Nitin Gadkari on raising the height of roads, so that the movement of traffic is not impacted during rains.
