Outrage at Jharkhand Judge's murder in broad daylight

NEW DELHI: The murder of Uttam Anand who was the Dhanbad additional district and sessions judge in a hit-and-run in broad daylight on the wee hours of Wednesday in what was made to look like an accident has spurred rage anger across the section of people, especially the judiciary.

The issue was raised by Supreme Court Bar Association before the Chief Justice of India NV Ramana who said that he shared the anguish of the fraternity and had spoken to the Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court to give necessary orders to the state government for a report and expeditious investigation in the matter.

The state HC in turn pulled up the home department for not filing an FIR expeditiously in the matter and has warned the government that if there was any delay in investigation and filing a report then it will be forced to refer the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for a indeth probe. 

Judge Anand who was hearing some high profile cases, was killed in a road accident on Wednesday when an unidentified auto rick ran over him when he was out on a morning walk. He was rushed to the hospital by someone who was passing by and no one knew that he was a senior sessions judge. Finding him missing his family meanwhile filed a missing person complaint and only after the police began to scan the hospitals that they came to know that the victim was judge Anand.

But since he had sustained grievous injuries to the head which proved fatal, he died of those injuries while being treated. 

In the first instance, it looked like a hit-and-run accident case, however when the police began scanning the CCTV from the area they found out to their shock that the vehicle had deliberately mowed Anand down and went speeding away. 

Moving swiftly the police identified the owner of the vehicle which turned out to be stolen, however, they have made some arrests including two people - Lakhan Kumar Verma a history-sheeter and his accomplice Rahul Verma who were allegedly in the vehicle when it rammed into the judge. 

The police have formed a special investigating team (SIT) and are clamping down on various suspects, however, they are tight-lipped on the course of investigation saying that they would make necessary disclosures shortly.

Judge Anand had been handling many cases of mafia killings in Dhanbad town and had recently rejected the bail requests of two gangsters including one Ravi Thakur of the Aman Singh gang involved in cases of extortion and murder of coal traders and land developers.

The murder case of Ranjay Singh, a close aide of MLA Sanjeev Singh, was also pending before his court.
