History made in Supreme Court as 9 new judges take oath

NEW DELHI: History was made in the judicial sector of the country with nine new judges including three women judges being sworn into office to the Supreme Court (SC) at one go, today With today's appointments, the strength of the apex court has now risen to 33 of the total sanction number of 34 judges.

The nine new judges who were administered the oath of office by the Chief Justice of India (CJI) N V Ramana in a ceremony held in the auditorium of the SC's complex include Justice Abhay Shreeniwas Oka, Justice Vikram Nath, Justice Jitendra Kumar Maheshwari, Justice C T Ravikumar, Justice M M Sundresh, and Justice P S Narasimha. 

The three women judges sworn into the SC include Justice Bela M Trivedi, Justice Hima Kohli and Justice Bangalore Venkataramiah Nagarathna.

The SC's Collegium headed by the CJI had recommended these nine names for appointment as judges of the top court in a single day on August 17, and the same was swiftly approved by the government after which it was sent to President Ram Nath Kovind who signed the warrants of their appointments.

Before the administration of the oath of office, the President's warrant of appointment issue was read during the swearing-in ceremony. SC  judges retire at the age of 65, while judges of high courts retire at the age of 62.

Daughter of former CJI E S Venkataramiah, Justice Nagarathna who is an alumnus of the University of Delhi law faculty and has served as a judge of the Karnataka High Court since 2008 is in line to become the first woman CJI in September 2027. Justices Nath, Nagarathna and Narasimha are also in line to become the CJI.

Although as a practice, the oath of office to new judges is administered in the CJI's courtroom no 1, however considering the need for strict adherence to COVID-19 norms, the same was shifted to the auditorium.
