Bypolls: Congress wins big in HP while BJP sweeps northeast, TMC in WB

NEW DELHI: The by-polls to 29 assembly seats and three Lok Sabha seats held on October 30 had a mixed bag for all parties, with The Indian National Congress (Congress) retaining its 9 seats and winning big in Himachal Pradesh (HP) by winning all three assembly seats of Fatehpur, Arki and Jubbal-Kotkhai and the Mandi Lok Sabha seat, in Bhartiya Janata Party (BJ) ruled state. 

in Rajasthan, the ruling Congress won the by-polls to the Vallabhnagar and Dhariawad assembly seats. In Dhariawad, Congress candidate Nagraj Meena won by a margin of 18,725 votes, in Vallabhnagar Preeti Shaktawat defeated Rashtriya Loktantrik Party's candidate Udailal Dangi by a margin of 20,606 votes. The Congress also retained the Deglur (SC) assembly constituency in Maharashtra's Nanded district with Jitesh Raosaheb Antapurkar defeating BJP's Subhash Pirajirao Sabne by a margin of 41,917 votes.

The BJP on the other hand swept in the northeast, winning all the five seats in Assam and one each in Mizoram and Meghalaya while its partner UPPL won the other two seats in Assam. BJP also won the by-polls from the Khandwa Lok Sabha constituency in Madhya Pradesh with its candidate Gyaneshwar Patil defeating his nearest Congress rival by a big margin of 82,140 votes.

In Karnataka, BJP won the Sindgi assembly segment but lost the Hangal seat to Congress. Ramesh Bhusanur of BJP won in Sindgi seat by a margin of 31,185 votes securing 93,865 votes, while his rival Congress candidate Ashok Managuli secured 62,680 votes, while in Hangal, Congress's Srinivas Mane won by securing 87,490 votes, while his BJPs Shivaraj Sajjanar bagged 80,117 votes.

In West Bengal (WB) the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) register big in the state and won the by-polls of Shantipur, Gosaba, Dinhata and Khardaha. According to Election Commission data, the ruling TMC got 76.5 per cent of the total polled votes while BJP got only 14.5 per cent of the votes.

On the other hand, Shiv Sena candidate Kalaben Delkar wife of former independent MP Mohan Delkar won the by-election to the Dadra and Nagar Haveli Lok Sabha seat with a comfortable margin of 51,269 votes. She garnered 1,18,035 votes against BJP's Mahesh Gavit who bagged 66,766 votes. The seat was rendered empty after Delkar's husband Mohan Delkar committed suicide earlier this year, leaving a 15-page suicide note where he held politicians and administrative officials.

In Bihar, Nitish Kumar's Janata Dal United (JDU) won both seats that went to the polls, while in Haryana Indian National Lok Dal’s Abhay Singh Chautala on Tuesday defeated his rival BJP's Gobind Kanda by over 6,000 votes in a close contest to retain the Ellenabad seat.

In Telangana BJP's candidate, Eatala Rajender won the Huzurabad assembly constituency by a margin of 23,855 votes, against his nearest rival Gellu Srinivas Yadav of the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) led by chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao.
