Two woman journalists arrested for reporting on communal violence in Tripura

NEW DELHI: Two women journalists who had come to Tripura to report on the recent communal incidents in the state were detained by the Assam Police from Fatikroy police station in Karimganj near the Assam-Tripura border.

Samriddhi Sakunia (21) and Swaran Jha (25), journalists of independent news website HW News Network, were named in a first information report (FIR) at Fatikroy police station in Tripura on Sunday based on a complaint filed by Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) worker.

Sakunia tweeted about the detention saying, "We have been detained at the Nilambazar police station, Karimganj, Assam. We were informed by the officer-in-charge of Nilambazar PS that SP of Gomti District gave the orders for our detention."

According to a statement released by HW Network, in their complaint, the VHP worker has alleged that he has maligned the image of the Tripura government and his organisation.

"Our reporters Ms Samriddhi Sakunia and Ms Swarna Jha have been detained by Assam Police on their way to Silchar. Assam Police has said that they don't have any cause against our journalists but Tripura Police asked them to detain them," the media house said, adding that they were being taken to Tripura for further questioning.

It also added that this was sheer harassment and targeting of the press on the part of Tripura Police and the state government.

The arrests has triggered widespread condemnation from the fraternity, who have questioned the police for taking action against two journalists doing their job.
