Several opposition MPs move notice to discuss incidents in Nagaland

NEW DELHI: Several members of parliament (MP) of the opposition parties both in Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha have moved notices in their respective houses to discuss the firing incident in Nagaland in which at least 14 civilians and one soldier has been killed.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reportedly held a series of meeting with the top ministers over the incident to discuss the situation and to formulate the government's strategy in both houses which are in session.

In a case of mistaken identity and later in the ensuing violence,  security forces of the army opened fire on civilians in an ambush, killing 14 and injuring 11 more in Nagaland's Mon district on Saturday late evening.

The forces were acting on a tip-off about insurgents belonging to the Yung Aung of the banned outfit National Socialist Council of Nagaland-Khaplang (NSCN-K) faction which turned out to be false.

Reacting to the incident, opposition leaders have already expressed their outrage on the incident. Rahul Gandhi posted on social media, 'This is heart wrenching. GOI must give a real reply. What exactly is the home ministry doing when neither civilians nor security personnel are safe in our own land?'

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has also demanded a thorough investigation and described it as 'worrisome news' on Sunday.

While the state government has announced an investigation by a special team, the Army has also already expressed regret over the incident and said it is being investigated at the highest level.

Meanwhile, the Union Home Minister Amit Shah is expected to make a statement on the firing incident in both the houses of Parliament later in the day.
