Events finally favouring Peace: A moment the world must seize

NEW DELHI: In a world long wearied by conflict, glimmers of hope are emerging from the battlefields that have dominated headlines for years. The protracted war in Ukraine, now entering a phase of grinding attrition, shows signs of exhaustion on both sides, while the brief but devastating US-Iran confrontation appears on the brink of resolution. These developments suggest that events are finally tilting towards peace. It is a fragile window, but one that demands a collective embrace. Everyone, nations, leaders, and citizens, must give peace a genuine chance.

The Russia-Ukraine conflict, which has consumed vast resources and lives since 2022, is witnessing a notable shift. Ukrainian forces have recorded territorial gains in several sectors in recent months, even as Russian advances have stalled or reversed in key areas like Donetsk. With reports of heavy Russian casualties, disrupted logistics, and internal Kremlin recognition of a strategic "dead end," the momentum of the endless offensive appears broken. Truces, prisoner swaps, and back-channel diplomacy under international pressure indicate both sides may be inching towards negotiations.

Similarly, the US-Iran war that erupted in late February 2026 with intense strikes has moved rapidly from escalation to de-escalation. Following the assassination of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and widespread damage, a ceasefire brokered in April has held tenuously. As of late May, President Trump has stated that an agreement is "largely negotiated," with talks focusing on uranium enrichment, the Strait of Hormuz, and sanctions relief. The conflict's swift economic shockwaves, disrupted oil flows, regional instability, and humanitarian costs underscored the perils of prolonged confrontation. A stable resolution here could reshape West Asian security and ease global energy anxieties.

These parallel movements are no coincidence. War fatigue, economic realities, and shifting great-power calculations are compelling pragmatism. In Ukraine, battlefield realities are clashing with maximalist goals. In the Middle East, the high costs of direct superpower involvement have prompted restraint. Broader global dynamics, China's mediation efforts, European resolve, and American domestic priorities—further favour diplomacy over attrition.

Yet hope alone is insufficient for global peace. Peace requires courage: leaders must compromise on sovereignty, security guarantees, and justice. Ukraine deserves robust assurances against future aggression. Iran must integrate responsibly into the regional order. The international community, including emerging powers like India, should invest in verification mechanisms, reconstruction, mediation and conciliations.
