MUMBAI: In a major development in Bollywood, the Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) has issued a ‘non-cooperation directive’ against superstar Ranveer Singh, effectively asking its over 5 lakh members not to work with the actor until he resolves a dispute with producer Farhan Akhtar over the shelved project Don 3.
The controversy erupted after Ranveer Singh reportedly walked out of the much-awaited film just weeks before the shoot was scheduled to begin. Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani’s Excel Entertainment claimed they had already incurred losses of nearly Rs 45 crore in pre-production expenses. The producers approached FWICE in April 2026 seeking intervention.
FWICE President Ashoke Pandit and General Secretary Ashok Dubey held a press conference on May 25, announcing the directive. They stated that the federation had sent three notices to Ranveer Singh, but he failed to appear for a personal hearing. In response, Ranveer’s team reportedly conveyed through email that FWICE was “not the appropriate forum” to resolve contractual disputes between an actor and a production house.
The move has triggered intense debate within the film industry. While some view it as necessary accountability for last-minute exits that affect hundreds of technicians and workers, others have criticised FWICE for overstepping its authority. Filmmakers like Sanjay Gupta and Ram Gopal Varma have questioned the union’s decision, calling it “outdated muscle-flexing.”
FWICE’s chief advisor later clarified that it is not a formal "ban", but a non-cooperation call, and members are free to decide individually. However, the directive carries significant weight as FWICE represents technicians, spot boys, lightmen, and other crucial crew members across India.
Ranveer Singh, who is currently shooting for other of his current projects, was spotted at Mumbai airport wearing a mask and avoiding the media. His team has maintained that professional discussions should be handled with dignity and through proper legal channels.
The episode highlights the growing tension between big stars and powerful industry unions in Bollywood. As the situation develops, industry watchers are closely monitoring whether this dispute will be resolved amicably or head to court.
